Continue reading the article to find out more!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gas, diesel and biomass: what are the options to choose from?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>process of drying cereals<\/strong> plays a fundamental role in the cereal <strong>processing<\/strong> chain, as it allows optimal <strong>conservation<\/strong>, particularly in countries where the climate is not particularly favourable during the harvest season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burners are installed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mecmargroup.com\/en\/news\/agricultural_dryer_what_it_is_and_why_you_should_use_it-31\">agricultural dryers<\/a>, which generate heat by <strong>heating<\/strong> the air, <strong>allowing the water contained in the grain to evaporate<\/strong>. If treated and dried <strong>evenly<\/strong> and uniformly, the grain can then be stored in complete <strong>safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Drying is a slow process, but indispensable for <strong>eliminating mould and toxins<\/strong>, the presence of which &#8211; natural after the harvesting phase &#8211; would compromise <strong>the correct conservation of the grain in the medium to long term<\/strong>. Depending on the type of cereal, drying brings the <strong>moisture<\/strong> level of the grain down to a safe level for optimal storage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But what are the <strong>different types of fuels<\/strong> that can be used in grain drying? Thermal power can be generated using either <strong>liquid<\/strong> or <strong>gaseous<\/strong> fuels, through a <strong>direct or indirect heating system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Do you already know the <strong>difference<\/strong> between these two <strong>heating<\/strong> <strong>methods<\/strong>? What is it specifically? Biodiesel is a <strong>fuel obtained from renewable sources<\/strong>, such as vegetable oils, through a chemical <strong>process of transesterification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If we compare this type of fuel to ordinary diesel, we can see that <strong>biodiesel\u00a0<\/strong>has some <strong>advantages\u00a0<\/strong>in terms of <strong>sustainability<\/strong>. In fact, using a biodiesel grain dryer means <strong>reducing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions<\/strong>, as well as particulate <strong>matter emissions<\/strong>, thus less pollution and less impact on global warming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Specifically, most <strong>biodiesel fuels<\/strong> are a <strong>mixture<\/strong> <strong>of conventional diesel and a bio component<\/strong> that can vary between 10 and 20%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the <strong>advantages of using liquid fuels<\/strong> are well known to all, particularly the <strong>logistics factor<\/strong> and <strong>availability<\/strong>, there is a <strong>growing popularity of agricultural dryers powered by gas<\/strong>, be it natural gas, LPG or biogas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Methane<\/strong> and <strong>LPG<\/strong> prove to be the <strong>ideal type of fuel<\/strong>, as the combustion products of gaseous fuels have a low polluting impact. For this reason, a burner suitable for <strong>gas<\/strong> combustion can be installed inside Mecmar dryers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Comparing the <strong>quantity of CO2<\/strong> emitted during the combustion of diesel and LPG, it can be seen that in the latter case <strong>emissions are reduced<\/strong> by approximately <strong>25%<\/strong>. Unlike mains gas, it is essential to have a <strong>good knowledge of the composition of the gas mixture<\/strong>, as some burner components may corrode and be damaged if acidic mixtures are used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If we consider that the <strong>percentage <\/strong>of <strong>carbon dioxide\u00a0<\/strong>released into the air during combustion of good wood chips is very low, we can confirm that <strong>the use of wood chips as fuel reduces the impact of the drying process on the ecosystem<\/strong>, preserving the quality of life of all beings living in it.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fuel consumption for cereal drying: which variables to consider?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How much fuel is consumed during the grain drying process? The <strong>elements<\/strong> that <strong>influence<\/strong> <strong>fuel consumption<\/strong> are heterogeneous and variable, however, the main ones relate to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">the <strong>level of cleanliness of the grain<\/strong>: the cleaner the grain, the lower the fuel consumption for drying;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>temperature<\/strong> and <strong>humidity<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>outside<\/strong> <strong>air<\/strong>: the colder and more humid the season, the higher the fuel consumption will be.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>the humidity of the grain<\/strong> to be processed: the level of humidity affects fuel consumption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this article we have seen an <strong>overview of the different fuel systems<\/strong> that can currently be used in the drying process.
