What are the benefits of roasting different grains?

Since there is typically an average ruminal retention time of 16 hours, corresponding to an emptying rate of 6% of the volume per hour (Ross et al., 2013), it is important to evaluate ruminal degradation after this time interval. The extracted meal is the one that is most intensely degraded during the first 16 hours, while the other treatments lead to a lower and more similar rate of effective degradation.

  • Corn. Extensive research has shown that roasted corn is more digestible than its raw form due to the gelatinization of the starch.

The roasting process, especially when performed with direct flame, is extremely effective at removing mold spores and reducing toxin levels, crucial for the safety of pigs and poultry.   • Barley. From a nutritional standpoint, roasting improves the digestibility of the grain by breaking down the cellular structure of the kernel, thus facilitating access to its nutrients by animals.
