Crop drying: multi-grain solutions from Mecmar

Updated on 7.06.2023

At harvest time, every crop – be it soya, oilseed rape, oats or other – needs to be dried in order to retain its nutritional and commercial value. But is it possible to dry different types of crops using the same machine? Of course! For more than twenty years, Mecmar has been designing and manufacturing mobile multi-grain systems for drying different types of grain.

Mecmar’s multi-grain solutions are ideal plants for those who have little space in their company to dedicate to the dryer, want to keep running costs down and increase revenues. Mecmar solutions make you independent in the management of this process, thus giving you the possibility of recouping the investment made in just a few years.

Given their flexibility and durability, Mecmar mobile dryers will allow you to move the drying point and/or resell the system after a few years.

In this article we have gathered some useful information for choosing the best Mecmar machine for drying your crops. Read on to find out more!

Do you need to dry different types of grain? A mobile dryer is the solution for you

Drying is the first indispensable step – after the grain harvest – to increase the value of one’s products. There are different models and types of dryers on the market. However, the main distinction to be aware of concerns mobile dryers with a discontinuous cycle and tower dryers with a continuous cycle. Describing the first alternative in more detail, the advantages of having a mobile machine can be briefly summarised as follows:

  • The mobile dryer is easy to install and requires minimal maintenance. Drying costs – resulting mainly from the expenditure of electricity, fuel and labour – are greatly reduced thanks to the developments and improvements introduced in recent years.
  • Drying takes place in batches: the machine is loaded with grain, according to its maximum capacity, so that drying can begin. In fact, the mobile dryer can be loaded and start drying immediately after it is put into the field. A dryer that operates in a continuous cycle, on the other hand, requires a longer start-up time – a few hours approximately – before it achieves continuous stable production.
  • A mobile dryer ensures maximum throughput over the years. In addition, batch plants are designed to be easy to move and use, and to prepare your crop for optimal grain storage. Your farm management will benefit, as will your profits.

Optimal crop drying with specially designed performance solutions

Mecmar’s experience – the result of continuous technical tests and a close relationship with its customers – makes it possible to design and build mechanical grain dryers that work well and consume little. A practical example to confirm this? Inside Mecmar dryers it is possible to install a high resistance boiler, designed to balance air and heat flows, located in the pressure chamber of the system.

The boiler in question is designed to ensure optimum air flow, with no dispersion to the outside. The external surfaces of the dryer are kept cool so that all the heat produced by the burner is used 100% in the drying process. Every single calorie is used to gently and evenly process the grain loaded inside the machine.

Another important aspect to consider when purchasing a dryer concerns its electrical power. An optimal balance between electrical power consumed and drying cycle avoids the risk of charging too much or too little energy per grain. In fact, there is a limit to how much energy the grain can absorb to be dried without raising the consumption costs too much.

If too much energy – not absorbed by the grain – is loaded, it is dissipated, thus wasted. If, on the other hand, too little energy is transferred to the grain, the drying process would be excessively long or there would even be a risk that some of the grains in the mass would not be dried properly.

A further strength of the crop-drying machines relates to simplified labour. In fact, all Mecmar dryers operate safely and automatically. The safety systems with which they are equipped therefore make it possible to intervene promptly in the event of any alarm or danger situation occurring.

At this point, it is clear that the work of your employees will no longer be concerned with the management of the machine, but only with its supervision. With Mecmar, less physical effort therefore equals the possibility of obtaining a healthier cereal with a higher commercial value.

In conclusion…

If you are looking for a solution that allows you to dry different types of crops with just one machine, Mecmar’s multi-grain dryers may be just what you are looking for. Unlike a fixed continuous cycle plant, mobile multi-grain dryers are perfectly capable of processing a few tonnes of product in a few hours, processing different types of grain simultaneously.
