Are you looking for a machine to roast your crop but not sure which model to choose? In this short guide we will explain, point by point, all the aspects to consider when considering the purchase of a seed roaster.

But why is the seed roasting stage so important? Properly roasted cereals are nutrient- and protein-rich foods that are tastier and more palatable for humans as well as animals. Healthier, more digestible and assimilable: feeding your herd with roasted grains will result in healthier animals and thus better quality meat that you can sell at a much higher market value.

But how to choose the right seed roaster? The Mecmar team tells you below. Follow us!

What is the size of your farm?

Depending on the production needs of your farm, Mecmar has designed a different model of seed roaster. So, in this first evaluation phase, we consider the quantity of grain to be roasted and the number of livestock to be fed daily. The calculation of the maximum amount of grain to be roasted depends on various factors, including:

  • Type of animal (mono gastric or poly gastric)
  • Size and age of the animal
  • Type of diet (lean or fattening)

Let us assume that we have to feed a herd of adult fattening cattle. Considering that an average bovine consumes approximately 1 kg/soya per day, to maintain a herd of 500 animals, approximately 500 kg/day of roasted soya mixed with other natural or extracted meals is required. This is the only way to ensure the correct balanceof proteins, vitamins, fats and minerals.

For what purpose do you toast your harvest?

Is the roasted product intended for human or animal consumption? In both cases, roasted grains such as wheat, maize, soya and barley play a key role in nutrition. Being rich in carbohydrates, proteins and essential amino acids, roasted grains have a relevant nutritional and energetic function. In addition to this, let us remember that a healthier and tastier food is more palatable to the animal, which, by eating plenty of it, will grow strong and healthy. Its commercial value will also benefit as a result.

What type of animal do you need to feed?

Ruminants, pigs, poultry or other? Roasted grains obtained through the use of a seed roaster have excellent nutritional properties and a high protein level. Returning to the example of cattle, protein bypass can accelerate the digestibility of soya. In fact, roasting makes the roasted product more attackable by the animal's gastric juices and therefore more digestible than grain that is only dried. By working so that all the grains are evenly roasted, Mecmar's seed roasters eliminate any residual mould, thereby minimising the levels of harmful toxins from the grain itself.

Which energy source do you want to use to power your roaster?

Crucial to the economics and treatment of the grain is also the choice of fuel type used to produce the heat required for roasting. Mecmar roasting machines can be equipped with a gas, diesel or LPG burner: these represent the most traditional and still most popular fuel alternatives. If, on the other hand, you wish to roast your crop without using fuels, but using a sustainable and 100% electric system, Mecmar has developed the solution for you: a plug&play electric roaster to guarantee optimal roasting of small/medium quantities of grain.

In conclusion

Choosing the right seed roaster for your farm benefits your farm and your profits. That is why it is so important to evaluate certain aspects before purchasing a grain roaster. In particular, ask yourself four simple questions:

  1. What is the size of your farm?
  2. For what purpose do you roast your crop?
  3. What type of animal do you need to feed?
  4. What energy source do you want to use to feed your roaster?
